Check how your gym accepts cancellation
Check the contract before sending notice: the minimum term, accepted cancellation method and effective date can differ. Keep the gym's acknowledgement alongside your own records. Read the current Citizens Advice guidance on cancelling a gym membership if the terms or your circumstances are unclear.
What your cancellation letter should include

- Your full name and membership number
- The gym branch you belong to
- The date of the letter
- A clear statement that you are cancelling your membership
- The date your notice period ends
Sign the letter before saving it as a PDF, and keep a copy. It is a record of the wording you prepared.

Gym cancellation FAQs
Can I cancel my gym membership by email or phone?
Use the cancellation method accepted by your contract or gym. That may be an online account, email, phone or post. Keep a copy and any acknowledgement. Posting a letter does not automatically cancel the membership.
How much notice do I have to give?
Read your own contract for the minimum term, notice period, permitted method and any cancellation charge. There is no single notice period that applies to every gym. Ask the gym to confirm the effective cancellation date.
What if the gym says it never received my letter?
Keep your document and available postal records, and contact the gym using its accepted process. A PostOwl update does not prove receipt or that contractual notice took effect. Check any carrier tracking and get advice if there is a dispute.
What if they keep taking payments after I cancel?
Check the contract and cancellation acknowledgement, then use the gym or billing company complaint process. Cancelling a payment instruction does not by itself end the contract. Citizens Advice can help you understand your options.
