Check the correct HMRC postal address

A reply to an existing HMRC letter may need to go back to the team named on it. For a new enquiry, start with the relevant official contact page. Check whether an online form, phone call or specific appeal route is required before preparing a posted letter.

BX9 postcodes: no invented street or city

A BX address can be valid without the street or city you would expect in an ordinary postal address. For example, the official VAT enquiry address above uses BX9 1WR. Keep the department name and postcode exactly as published. A geographic postcode lookup may not verify a BX address; that is not independent confirmation that your department or recipient is correct.

Prepare your letter and attachments

  • State what you are asking HMRC to do and which letter or decision you are replying to.
  • Include the appropriate reference, such as your UTR or National Insurance number, only where needed.
  • Add your contact details, the date and any required signature. Check that scanned pages are legible.
  • Keep a copy. PostOwl accepts PDFs up to 50 pages and 8 MB; it cannot enclose a cheque or an original document.

For a return, use HMRC's current tax-return forms guidance and filing instructions. Confirm the tax year, supplementary pages, signatures and applicable deadline. PostOwl does not validate tax returns or guarantee acceptance of a copy.

Print and post when your document is ready

Upload your PDF or write a letter online, enter the UK address and review the complete preview and total before paying. One black-and-white page costs £1.79 with standard second class or £2.69 with first class, including a separate PostOwl insert. Other choices can cost more. Check the available collection and delivery options.

Printing acceptance, postal handoff and delivery are separate events. Read our guide to dispatch records and proof of posting before choosing a service for a deadline. For response times, use HMRC's reply-time tool.

HMRC post FAQs

Which HMRC address should I use?

Use the address on the HMRC letter you are replying to, or the official contact page for your specific enquiry. The examples below are for general enquiries; complaints, payments, forms and specialist teams may use different routes.

What city do I put for BX9 1WR?

Do not invent a city. HMRC lists its general VAT address as BT VAT, HM Revenue and Customs, BX9 1WR, United Kingdom, without a street or city. Copy the published department and postcode, and check the complete address preview before paying.

Does a dispatch record prove HMRC received my letter?

No. A PostOwl update is not a Royal Mail Certificate of Posting or proof of HMRC receipt, acceptance or deadline compliance. Standard first and second class are untracked. Check the evidence required for your particular correspondence.

Can I post a paper tax return through PostOwl?

Check HMRC's current form, tax-year, signature, supplementary-page and filing instructions first. PostOwl prints the PDF you provide; it does not check a return, supply original documents or guarantee that a printed copy is acceptable. A print order is not a tax-return submission to HMRC.

What happens to my uploaded PDF?

The PDF is deleted from PostOwl storage after successful dispatch. Production failures can require temporary retention while investigated or retried. Providers retain their own service records; see the privacy notice for the full retention terms.

How long does HMRC take to reply?

Reply times depend on the tax and request. Use HMRC's official response-time tool. A PostOwl status or postal tracking update does not show when HMRC opened or processed your correspondence.
